Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Mostly, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and have to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very healthy and good for you. Some foods really do improve your mood when you eat them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you combat depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping raise your mood. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for improving your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of it in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a great source of protein.

If you wish to overcome depression, try eating some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.

It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are fantastic at helping you be happier. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to better your mood. It’s not difficult to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your sugar levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You were just expecting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew that green tea helps you be healthier. Now you are aware that green tea can help you be happier as well!

As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you just so to feel better! Try these hints instead!
