Foods That Make Your Mood Better

Most of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are terrible and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that really can improve your moods when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, you might be surprised to learn, are great at combating depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Eat an egg and be happy!

Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all helpful for elevating your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3 and DHA. These are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you fight your depression.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are fantastic at helping you feel better. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to make your mood better. Feeling starved can really make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. You digest these grains quicker than other things which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood also!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Go with these tips instead!
