Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

For the most part, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and should be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. Several foods actually do improve your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to discover, are terrific at fighting depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Try to eat an egg and feel a lot happier!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that directs the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you would like to be in a better mood. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all high in omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

Some grains are actually great for repelling bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can really help to better your mood. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel famished! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s easy for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood glucose which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You probably already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood also!

So you see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Try these hints instead!
