Use Food to Improve Your Mood

Most of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we must avoid them. At times, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. A number of foods really do boost your mood when you eat them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional boost, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and cheer up!

Put together a trail mixfrom various seeds and nuts. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the happier you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein source.

If you would like to battle depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Some grains are really wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are great at helping you feel better. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling famished can really bring you down! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s easy for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while also loosening up the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try a few of these instead!
