Use Food to Improve Your Mood

Mostly, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, you might be amazed to learn, are terrific at combating depression. Just be sure that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that affect your mood. Eat an egg and be happy!

Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great if you would like to be in a better mood. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you battle your depression.

It’s not difficult to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you be happier. They help you feel full too which can truly help to make your mood better. Feeling famished can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew green tea could help you feel better. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to elevate your moods also!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
