Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

Mostly, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really healthy and good for you. A number of foods honestly do improve your mood when you eat them. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually terrific at beating back depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat some eggs to cheer up!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible because these foods have a bunch of magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all high in omega-3 and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.

It’s not difficult to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all wonderful for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest. You digest them quicker than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood also!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a few of these suggestions instead.
