Use Food to Improve Your Mood

Mostly, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be super healthy and good for you. Some foods honestly do raise your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you do not toss the egg yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you raise your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Consume an egg and be happy!

Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all terrific for helping to boost your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific source of protein.

Cold water fish are great if you are wanting to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you overcome depression.

Grains can be wonderful for fighting a bad mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all wonderful for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel hungry! These grains can improve your mood because it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. You digest them quicker than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know green tea can help raise your mood as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a few of these suggestions instead.
