Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood

Most of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to stay away from them. At times, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be super nutritious and good for you. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can improve your mood. If you feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Consume an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a fantastic protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you overcome your depression.

It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you feel better. They help you feel full also which can truly help to better your mood. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while simultaneously calming the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be better. Now you are well aware that it helps you to lift your moods too!

As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try several of these instead!
