Foods That Make You Happy

Most of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and are to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really nutritious and good for you. Some foods honestly do raise your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional boost, test out some of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are great at fighting depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Eat an egg and cheer up!

Make a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given time. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of bettering your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to fight depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you overcome your depression.

It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are terrific at helping you have a happier mood. They fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. Feeling famished can really bring you down! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Your mood can actually be helped by green tea. You were just expecting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You knew green tea could help you feel healthier. Now you are aware that it helps you to elevate your moods as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
