Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

For the most part, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and have to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that really can raise your moods when you consume them. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional boost, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at dealing with depression. Just make sure that you do not throw away the egg yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to raise your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Eat some eggs to cheer up!

Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all good for elevating your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all high in omega-3 and DHA. These are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you overcome your depression.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a terrible mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can really help to better your mood. Feeling starved can be terrible! These grains can improve your mood as it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were sure it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you become better. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these tips instead.
