Use Food to Improve Your Mood

For the most part, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and have to be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this holds true. At times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to eat. There are several foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to find out, are terrific at battling depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–work better. Consume an egg and jolly up!

Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, in addition to bettering your mood, can be a super source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you are wanting to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods also. Feeling starved can truly bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same calming the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Test out these suggestions instead!
