Foods That Make You Happy

Many of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are bad and are to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. Some foods really do elevate your mood when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you might be amazed to learn, are wonderful at combating depression. You need to be sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to raise your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Consume an egg and feel a lot happier!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all helpful for elevating your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more serotonin in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a super protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to combat depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight depression.

Grains can be good for driving away a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all excellent for helping you feel better. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods as well. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you feel hungry! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are easy to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is actually good for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. Now you are well aware that it helps you to elevate your moods too!

So you see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try these suggestions instead!
