Learn How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to consume. Some foods actually do boost your mood when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at beating back depression. Just make sure that you do not toss the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Try consuming some eggs to cheer up!

Put together a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to battle depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

It’s not difficult to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all great for helping you feel better. They can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. Feeling starved can really bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be so much healthier. Now you know that it helps you to elevate your moods also!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Try these tips instead!
