Use Food to Improve Your Mood

Most of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are terrible and to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be very nourishing and good for you. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can boost your mood. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try some of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you battle depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and cheer up!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The more of it in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to fight depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

Grains can be good for driving away a terrible mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all excellent for helping you feel happier. They fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. Feeling hungry can really make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is actually good for your mood. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is found to be packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are aware that it can help you be happier too!

So you see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are not good for you just so to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
