Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

Most of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be very nutritious and good for you. There are several foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are wonderful for helping you battle depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for raising your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try eating an egg and jolly up!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to elevating your mood, can be a great protein source.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to combat depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.

Some grains are actually great for fighting off bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are terrific at helping you have a happier mood. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. It’s easy to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest. You digest them more quickly than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you become so much healthier. And now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are not good for you just so to feel better! Test out these tips instead!
