Foods That Make Your Mood Better

For the most part, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. At times, if the comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be really nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that, when you eat them, may boost your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to learn, are terrific at combating depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Eat an egg and be happy!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein food source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to combat depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you feel better. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest these foods more quickly than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You were simply waiting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps improve your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you be better. Now you know that it helps you to raise your moods as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
