Use Food to Improve Your Mood

In general, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for you. There are several foods that really can boost your moods when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to discover, are wonderful at battling depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Eat a few eggs to feel better!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific source of protein.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to fight depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly raise your mood.

Grains can be good for driving away a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. They can help you feel full for longer too, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can be awful! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are easy to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is actually great for your mood. You knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps raise your mental focus while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to be healthy when you drink green tea. And now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try some of these suggestions instead.
