Try Using Food to Improve Your Mood

In general, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and must be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to discover, are great at fighting depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for elevating your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Try eating a few eggs to feel better!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all helpful for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein food source.

If you want to defeat depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are terrific at helping you have a happier mood. They help you feel full also which can really help to make your mood better. It’s not hard to feel low when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest these foods quicker than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You just knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is high in a certain amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that it helps you to elevate your moods too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Go with these tips instead!
