Information on How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Many of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we have to avoid them. At times, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you fight depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Try to eat an egg and feel better!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you overcome your depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a bad mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all excellent for helping you feel happier. They can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. It’s easy to feel low when you are starving! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your sugar levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you be better. Now you know it can help raise your mood as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these tips instead.
