How to Improve Your Mood with Food

A lot of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we should stay away from them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. At times, comfort foods can be utterly nutritious and good for us to consume. A number of foods really do improve your mood when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you battle depression. You must be sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Consume an egg and feel a lot happier!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for elevating your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to beat back depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

Grains can be wonderful for driving away a bad mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you feel better. They can help you feel full for longer as well, which is a mood improver. Feeling hungry can be terrible! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is actually great for your mood. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are well aware that it helps you to raise your moods as well!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
