Use Food to Boost Your Mood

A lot of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we have to stay away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this is true. At times, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to eat. There are some foods that really can improve your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you fight depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are stuffed full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for raising your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Eat some eggs to cheer up!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all great for elevating your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given time. The more serotonin in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to battle depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

Grains can be good for driving away a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full also which can actually help to better your mood. It’s not difficult to feel low when you are starving! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is actually great for your mood. You just knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you drink green tea. And now you know green tea can help raise your mood also!

So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Test out these tips instead!
