Learn How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Most of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are terrible and are to be avoided. At times, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really healthy and good for you. Some foods actually do boost your mood when you consume them. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, test out a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to discover, are terrific at combating depression. You must be sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Eat a couple of eggs to jolly up!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to combat depression. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.

Grains can be great for driving away a bad mood. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all wonderful for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full too which can actually help to make your mood better. It’s easy to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your sugar levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You were simply expecting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become a lot healthier. Now you are aware that it helps you to raise your moods as well!

So you see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are not good for you just so to feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
