Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

In general, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that basically can boost your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you battle depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try consuming some eggs to jolly up!

Put together a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Nuts, along with elevating your mood, can be a super source of protein.

If you want to fight depression, try eating some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you overcome your depression.

Grains can be good for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are terrific at helping you have a happier mood. These grains fill you up better and that can help you with your moods also. Feeling hungry can really make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. Now you know that it helps you to elevate your moods too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these tips instead.
