Foods That Make Your Mood Better

Many of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are terrible and to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you consume them, may boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you fight depression. You must make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Eat an egg and cheer up!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, along with elevating your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you wish to be in a better mood. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

Some grains are actually great for driving away bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are terrific at helping you feel happier. They can help you feel full for longer too, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can really make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest these grains faster than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You were just anticipating to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a certain amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become better. Now you are well aware that it helps you to lift your moods also!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are bad for you just so to feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
