Use Food to Boost Your Mood

Many of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to keep away from them. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that basically can raise your moods when you consume them. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at beating back depression. You should see to it, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel happier!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to beat back depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you fight your depression.

Some grains are really great for repelling bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood glucose which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is really good for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that it helps you to elevate your moods also!

So you see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Test out these tips instead!
