Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we have to stay away from them. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be extremely nourishing and good for you. There are some foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the yolk. Whenever you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for boosting your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Try consuming some eggs to feel better!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a super source of protein.

If you would like to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.

It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you have a happier mood. They help you feel full too which can actually help to make your mood better. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you are starving! These grains can elevate your mood as it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you are well aware that it helps you to elevate your moods also!

See, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you want to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
