Foods That Can Make You Happy

Most of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we need to stay away from them. Often, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that, when you eat them, may better your mood. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, test out a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at beating back depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try to eat an egg and feel better!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the happier you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein food source.

If you wish to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 and DHA. These are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Grains can be excellent for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually great for helping raise your happiness levels. These foods can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. Feeling starved can be terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. You digest these foods faster than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is actually great for your mood. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that it helps you to raise your moods too!

As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try several of these instead!
