Try Using Food to Improve Your Mood

In general, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is true. At times, comfort foods can be very nutritious and good for us to consume. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, can better your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, test out some of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to find out, are great at battling depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to battle depression. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.

Some grains are really wonderful for repelling bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all great for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to better your mood. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood sugar which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are not good for you just so to feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
