Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood

In general, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional boost, test out some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you fight depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Try eating a couple of eggs to feel better!

Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The more of it in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a super protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you would like to feel better. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight back depression.

It’s not difficult to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really great for helping raise your happiness levels. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods also. It’s not difficult to feel a little bit off when you feel famished! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew that green tea helps you be a lot healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood also!

So you see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Go with these hints instead!
