How to Improve Your Mood with Food

In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be very healthy and good for you. A number of foods really do raise your mood when you eat them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you fight depression. You should see to it, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Try eating an egg and jolly up!

Make a trail mixout of various seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all great for improving your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to combat depression. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you overcome your depression.

Some grains are really great for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really great for helping raise your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can really help to better your mood. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while also relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you are aware that it helps you to lift your moods as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
