Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. At times, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you consume them, may boost your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to learn, are wonderful at combating depression. You need to make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, particularly the yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Try to eat an egg and feel better!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Nuts, along with raising your mood, can be a great source of protein.

If you would like to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

It’s not difficult to drive away your bad mood when you eat grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are great at helping you feel better. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to better your mood. Feeling famished can be terrible! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. You digest these grains faster than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is loaded with a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you become better. And now you know it can help raise your mood too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
